My Review

🌹 The World of the Black Rose Auction

Both stories revolve around the mysterious Black Rose Auction, a secretive high-society event where the ultra-wealthy gather to buy things that aren’t exactly… legal.

Think:

  • power plays
  • dangerous bargains
  • dark romance vibes
  • and a whole lot of morally gray characters

Each author takes this shared world and spins their own completely different romance within it.

💔 Shattered Innocence

This story leans fully into the dark fairytale retelling energy. Think Cinderella… but make it darker, steamier, and way more complicated.

We follow Birdie, who has grown up under the control of a cruel stepmother and is desperate to escape her situation—along with her stepsister Violet.

Enter Alaric Stone, a powerful billionaire whose presence in their lives changes everything.

And when the Black Rose Auction enters the picture, the stakes get even higher.

“You’re not going to worry because I’ve got you. You are mine, Birdie Windsor. And if I have to burn that mansion to the ground this weekend, I swear I’ll do it. This is not just some fling to me. You are my forever. Do you understand?.

This story definitely pushes boundaries and dives headfirst into darker romance territory.

🔥 Tropes & Vibes

If you love romance that isn’t afraid to go a little taboo, this one brings it.

You’ll find things like:

  • dark Cinderella retelling
  • billionaire hero
  • forbidden dynamics
  • poly romance elements
  • age gap
  • morally gray characters
  • extremely spicy scenes

Sara Cate definitely doesn’t hold back here, and if you enjoy bold, boundary-pushing dark romance, this one will absolutely grab your attention.

💭 My Thoughts

This story was intense, fast-paced, and very spicy.

Because it’s shorter, the plot moves quickly, but the darker themes and unique relationships definitely keep things interesting. It’s the kind of story that will really work for readers who enjoy romance that pushes outside the typical comfort zone.

👑 Royal Heart

While Shattered Innocence leans darker, Royal Heart brings in more romantic suspense and heist energy.

The story follows Ari Denton, a brilliant safecracker and analyst, who ends up working alongside Damon Hunt, a notorious thief.

Their mission?

Recover the legendary Royal Heart jewel that has surfaced at the Black Rose Auction.

To pull it off, they must pretend to be married while infiltrating the dangerous world surrounding the auction.

Cue the tension.

Cue the sparks.

Cue the chaos.

🔥 Tropes & Vibes

This one leans more toward action-driven romance with some classic fan-favorite tropes:

  • enemies to lovers
  • fake marriage
  • forced proximity
  • high-stakes heist
  • dangerous attraction
  • morally gray hero

The dynamic between Ari and Damon really carries the story. There’s tension, chemistry, and just enough danger to keep things exciting.

“I vowed I would never, ever come back, that I’d stay out of your life, but I broke that vow to save my brother. And once I saw you, I couldn’t walk away.”

💭 My Thoughts

I really enjoyed the heist element in this story. It adds a fun layer of suspense and keeps the plot moving.

Damon definitely gives off those dangerous but irresistible hero vibes, and the fake marriage trope always delivers a little extra tension and drama.

📖 The Fun Part: It’s a Flip Book

One of the coolest things about this release is that it’s literally a flip book.

You read one story… flip the book… and then start the next one from the other side.

It’s such a fun format and works really well here because both stories are connected through the same underground auction world, but still feel completely unique.

⭐ Final Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed this dual read.

Both stories bring something different to the table:

  • Shattered Innocence brings the dark, taboo romance energy
  • Royal Heart adds action, suspense, and a thrilling heist plot

Even though they’re connected through the same world, they each have their own tone and style—which made the flip-book concept even more fun.
