👀 I Went Into This Blind… BIG Mistake

I went into Dear Reader knowing absolutely NOTHING about it. No spoilers, no reviews, no clue what I was about to get myself into. I’m pretty sure Hoopla recommended it to me based on my reading history and honestly? Hoopla knew me a little too well because WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! 😭

By the end of this book I was sitting there questioning my entire existence, emotionally unstable, and immediately needing book two like oxygen.

That ending??? EXCUSE ME???

And somebody PLEASE explain to me what is actually going on with the Devil’s Backbone Society and these four chaotic men because I am OBSESSED.

🎓 Dark Academia + Secret Society Chaos

This book was SO much more than I expected. I went in thinking I was getting a spicy dark college romance, but this ended up being this insanely addictive mix of:

• dark academia
• mystery
• thriller suspense
• secret societies
• romance
• emotional chaos

Ashley is a scholarship student attending this elite university after her mother marries into wealth, which leaves her stuck with a stepbrother who absolutely hates her and his equally rich, powerful, ridiculously attractive friends.

Then she finds a hidden diary in her dorm room that starts with:

“Dear Reader, if you’ve found this diary, then I must be dead.”

UM HELLO??? Immediately hooked.

From there, Ashley gets pulled deeper into the dangerous world of the Devil’s Backbone Society where nobody can be trusted and every answer somehow creates ten more questions.

🔥 The Men… Unfortunately I Get It

Not only do we get FOUR hot morally questionable men, but somehow Tate James makes each of them feel completely distinct and equally addictive in their own terrifying ways.

And yes… they are ALL walking red flags 🚩😂

But the tension?? INSANE.

Every interaction had that electric edge-of-your-seat feeling from the very beginning. The chemistry was chaotic, toxic, obsessive, protective, addictive… basically everything I love in a dark romance.

Current ranking because obviously I have thoughts:

• Royce = certified menace and professional shit-stirrer (I LOVE HIM)
• Heath = close second because he gives chaotic Gumdrop vibes
• Carter = spicy bad boy perfection
• Nate = listen… I already KNOW he’s going to end up being my favorite

Also one of my favorite little details was how each of the guys had their own nickname for Ashley. It actually made it super easy to keep track of the POVs and relationships while also making each dynamic feel more personal.

🎧 The Audiobook Had Me in a CHOKEHOLD

I listened to the audiobook and HOLY HELL those narrators sucked me all the way in.

The full cast narration was honestly one of the best parts of the experience for me. Every male narrator sounded distinct, which made it so much easier to keep all the POVs straight, especially with four different love interests. The emotional delivery added SO much tension and drama to the story that some scenes genuinely felt cinematic.

I absolutely inhaled this audiobook.

Like… “just one more chapter” and suddenly it’s 2AM kind of inhaled.

🔪 The Suspense Was Addictive

What really surprised me was how strong the thriller and mystery aspects were. The journal/diary element made everything feel immersive because you’re piecing clues together right alongside Ashley, and the deeper she digs, the darker everything becomes.

And this book ESCALATES.

We go from elite university drama to mansion rescues, Paris alleyways, catacombs, secret society danger, brutal twists, and genuinely shocking moments where I literally stared at my ceiling afterward.

😂 Tate James Is Secretly Hilarious

Can we also acknowledge that Tate James books are always funny in the most unhinged way?

The sarcasm in this book was elite. Ashley absolutely gives “take no shit” energy and I loved watching her push back against the guys instead of immediately folding for them. Tate always writes heroines that feel strong without losing their emotional messiness and I eat it up every single time.

“I wish I could say it was lovely to meet you all, but frankly I’ve had more pleasant experiences stepping in dog shit.”

😭 That Cliffhanger Should Be Illegal

Listen.

THAT ENDING???

That cliffhanger was cruel, disrespectful, emotionally damaging, and perfectly executed 😂

I genuinely don’t even know what to trust anymore and now I need the next book immediately because Tate James absolutely ruined my peace with that final reveal.

This book completely sucked me in with the dark academia atmosphere, addictive mystery, chaotic romance, and nonstop tension. It felt like the perfect mix of thriller and dark romance with just enough emotional damage to keep me desperate for more.

…you NEED to read this book.
